There's Always a Story Behind the Story

The art of film making has come a long way since its first experimental beginnings in the late 1800's. It took only about a decade for this new art form to go from being a novelty to full-scale production companies. Things progressed swiftly as animation, newsreels and longer features increased in availability and popularity. The movie industry is now ingrained in all countries around the globe and is a major part of our modern culture.

Always a fan of films, I was content to enjoy the finished product as it entertained me for the moment.. My favorites were watched again and again. A fan, a BIG fan...I was the audience. For many films, the success is measured by the audience's opinion, box office count and critics reviews. I never really thought much about these things. I only measured it by my own criteria...Did I like it?

A series of fortunate events led me to a whole different perspective. My first Film Festival in Busan, South Korea introduced me to deeply passionate filmmakers who had a dream, believed in it, and turned their passion into films. Mostly independent films on a shoestring budget, these films opened my mind to the diversity of this industry.

An opportunity came to be able to use my newly attained International Press Card at Jeonju International Film Festival. As opportunities arose to meet the creators behind films and the actors who brought the characters to life, I saw that there is always a story behind the story. I was mesmerized as I listened to the journeys that the directors took in creating their films. To me, these stories were often as interesting as the stories on the screen and gave a new depth to watching the films.

From this comes the birth of Key Light. This term is used to describe a use of light in film making.

"Key Light:  the main or primary light on a subject, often angled and off-center (or from above) that selectively illuminates various prominent features of the image to produce depth, shadows, etc.; "  *

It is our mission to be this Key Light of Film Festivals. We will spotlight the story behind the films as we illuminate their journey to the screens of festivals around the world.
